Thoughts on the final project
Our group has met a few times, and we've decided that we want to come up with an interdisciplinary presentation incorporating elements of music, dance, and drama. We've decided to use the Jackson Pollock painting, "Autumn Rhythm", as the inspiration. I use inspiration fairly loosely, as I'm not entirely sure what form this inspiration is going to take. I've so far been collecting musical works and images from the era when that work was created, the early '50s. Musically, Pollock was inspired quite profoundly by the bebop jazz of that time period, particularly works like Charlie Parker's "Anthropology" and "Ornithology", and collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie like "Koko". Similarly, I've been collecting some recordings by Bud Powell, who was probably the preeminent bebop piano player. There's a lot of material to choose from, but I'm trying to come up with some kind of thread that can be used as the basis for our collaboration. So far, it looks as if we're all going to work on our individual parts separately. Paige will work on a dance inspired by the painting, while Lisa and Courtney will work on a narrative, or dramatic take on the work. Then, we'll bring everything together and integrate it. I'm not sure at the moment what the final form will be. We may want to create some kind of PowerPoint presentation for the project, or we may simply want to link it together as a series of webpages that can be accessed from any one of our individual websites.
